It was a moment of tears and laughter in equal measure for Connie Johnson, as she watched her brother Samuel take out his first Logie Award.

Crowded around an iPhone, Connie and a packed lounge room of friends watched as Samuel won the Best Actor Logie for his role playing Molly Meldrum in the TV series Molly, and then the moment when the emotional actor dedicated his win to his courageous sister.

In a video posted on the Love Your Sister Facebook page, Connie was pictured crossing her fingers before the announcement, and then breaking in to cheers and tear-filled smiles as her brother’s name was read out.

Watch the video below:

“My sister is succumbing finally to the perils of cancer after a three-decade long tussle,” Johnson told millions of Australian viewers.

“And rather than rolling over, she’s going out blazing, with an attempted world record for the longest line of coins, in the shape of a heart.

“The heart is being laid in 12 days, and on behalf of my beautiful sister Connie, who I dedicate this award to, I’d like to urge any family watching affected by cancer, or not, to join us in our quest to keep our families safe from the terrors of cancer.”

The actor set up the cancer charity Love Your Sister after his sister was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33. Connie is now 40.

And according to Johnson, the charity’s 380,000-strong Facebook following was the key factor behind his Gold Logie win.

“No actor from a one-off TV event or from a telemovie has ever been nominated for gold before, let alone taken home the bacon,” Johnson said backstage after his win.

“My sisters asked them to vote for me and they did in droves. Facebook has been swinging voting results lately and I think we’re no exception.

“I’m not a TV personality, I’m a Facebook personality,” he said.

The video of Connie celebrating has already been viewed almost 764,000 times since it was uploaded last night.

On Monday, Johnson revealed, despite the double Logie win, that he would stick with his decision to retire from acting.

He made the announcement last year, but has since confirmed his 25-year acting career will come to an end, to concentrate on raising $10 million for Connie’s charity.

“I’m giving it a spell for now,” he told ABC Radio Melbourne.

“I feel like I’m retiring the year I’ve won the Brownlow.

“It feels like epically bad timing but I’ve got to stick to my word.”

Johnson rejects drugs, after parties

On Monday morning Johnson told the Kyle and Jackie O radio show that he had skipped all of the Logies parties, despite presumably having an open invitation to any of them.

When Johnson told the pair he had “had no sleep”, they assumed he’d partied the night away. But he then revealed he’d gone straight home to see his sister.

“You haven’t got time to fraternise with other celebrities and coke-binge parties, he’s got his family to look after,” Sandilands noted.

Johnson responded: “I don’t need to be going and doing blow with all the Home and Away cast.”

“We’ve all been there and done that,” Sandilands responded.

“Mate, it’s always the kids, you think when will they learn,” Johnson said.”You (Sandilands) and I have learnt from all of that, sweetheart”.
