Mariah Carey: life suddenly not so sweet

US pop star Mariah Carey is cancelling a tour stop in Brussels amid safety concerns following the suicide attacks that killed 31 people.

The songstress, one of the best-selling female solo artists of recent times, was scheduled to perform in the Belgian city on Sunday as part of her Sweet Sweet Fantasy European tour.

“I love my fans in Brussels and at this time I am being advised to cancel my show for the safety of my fans, my band, crew and everyone involved with the tour. I hope to see you soon and send my prayers and eternal love,” she said on her Twitter account.

Her tour is due to end with back-to-back performances in Johannesburg in May.

Belgian police arrested three more people on Friday as investigations into Tuesday’s suicide bombings by Islamist militants in Brussels threw up more links to killings in Paris last year.

Friday’s arrests takes the total taken into custody to nine.

Meanwhile, a report in the Sydney Morning Herald ponders whether there is trouble brewing in Carey and James Packer’s paradise.

The story claims the planned wedding of the pair has been delayed “indefinitely” as the singer goes on tour and as their proposed guest list causes drama within the Packer family.

It’s been suggested a small group of just 50 people will be at the wedding.

Ben Tilley is tipped to be best man, a gig Packer’s former best friend David Gyngell had done at his two previous weddings.

Carey last week told The Sunday Times’ Style magazine: “If I start talking about this relationship, people will interpret it in their own way, so I think it’s safer for everyone involved to just not talk about the very personal aspects.”

She told The New York Times Packer would not be appearing in her upcoming reality television series: “He’s a legit businessman. It’s not really his thing to be, like, traipsing all over Europe and hanging out with all my crew and dancers and singers.”
