Adele tells Donald Trump to stop using her music

Pop superstar Adele has not given Donald Tump permission to use her music on the campaign trail.

The Republican candidate, famed for his xenophobic comments, has played Adele’s hits ‘Rolling in the Deep’ and ‘Skyfall’ as warm-up numbers at his rallies.

However, the lyrics to ‘Rolling in the Deep’ may not be the message Trump is trying to send, particularly the line: “You’re gonna wish you never had met me”.

A spokesperson for the ‘Hello’ singer told The Independent Adele had not given Trump permission to to use the songs.

Adele isn’t the first artist to have her music commandeered by the controversial candidate.

After he played ‘Dream On’ (including the lyric ‘Maybe tomorrow, the good lord will take you away’) Aerosmith’s lawyers sent cease and desist letters to Trump, arguing playing the band’s music implied they were somehow linked to the campaign.

Famed activists R.E.M. were less formal in their rhetoric when Trump played their 1984 hit song ‘It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)’.

“Go f**k yourselves, the lot of you – you sad, attention-grabbing, power-hungry little men. Do not use our music or my voice for your moronic charade of a campaign,” wrote frontman Michael Stipe in a statement at the time.

Historically, presidential candidates have known the important role music can play in their election bids.

In his successful 2008 campaign, Barack Obama used Stevie Wonder’s ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours’, while Bill Clinton has enlisted Fleetwood Mac’s hit ‘Don’t Stop’ over the years.
