Sydneysiders can expect cold and wet weather this week to mark the final days of winter.

Despite a recent tease of spring with warm and sunny weather, around 5mm of rain is forecast to fall in Sydney on Monday afternoon, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).

Conditions are predicted to worsen throughout the week, with a combination of southerly winds and up to 40mm of rain expected to wash through Sydney on Wednesday with temperatures not above 17C.

The NSW coast will bear the brunt of the rain, with up to 70mm expected to fall in the area on Wednesday.

BoM forecaster Peter Zmijewski said it is not unusual for the weather to jump about at this time of year.

“(It’s) very vulnerable to changes,” he said.

“So you can get hot days and you can get quite cold days as well. That is the nature of our climate.”

The cold weather is good news for the ski fields, with the chance of snow on Wednesday and Thursday, according to BoM.

The unpredictable weather will ease just in time for the weekend with Sunday temperature expected to reach a maximum of 22C.
