Severe weather warning for NT

A severe weather warning has been issued for people in the Arnhem, Carpentaria and Barkly districts of the Northern Territory.

The Bureau of Meteorology on Monday says a tropical low is located over the Eastern Carpentaria District, and is expected to bring damaging winds, heavy rainfall, abnormally high tides and damaging surf.

It is moving southeast at 10km/h and showers and thunderstorms with peak gusts around 90 km/h are forecast for parts of the region.

Locations that may be affected include Nhulunbuy, Alyangula, Angurugu, Daly Waters, Tennant Creek, Ali Curung, Alpurrurulam, Avon Downs, Brunette Downs and Elliott.

Possible flash-flooding may occur in Borroloola, Daly Waters, Wollogorang, Tennant Creek, Alpurrurulam, Avon Downs, Brunette Downs, Cresswell Downs and Elliott.

People in northeast Arnhem, such as Elcho Island, Galiwinku and Ngayawili, are advised to stay away from surf areas.
