Serena Williams, who won through into the US Open last 16 on Sunday, earned her 307th grand slam victory — the most by a woman in the Open era.

In her crushing 6-2, 6-1 win over Sweden’s Johanna Larsson, Williams passed Martina Navratilova and equalled Roger Federer for the most grand slam victories by a man or woman.

“Wow. That’s pretty awesome and honestly what a better place to do it than here, where it all started,” Williams told the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd.

“It is actually a really good feeling. To be up there with both men and women is something that’s super rare.”

Williams, 34, won her first grand slam at Flushing Meadows in 1999 and is on the verge of a record seventh US title.

The win would mark her 23rd piece of grand-slam silverware, one shy of Margaret Court who sits on top of the all-time tally with 24.

“Each number I’m definitely proud of,” said Williams. “I was really excited to (sic) 307. I was really excited to do that.”

Williams will push for win number 308 when she plays Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova on Tuesday.
