Ryan Lochte isn’t saying whether he’ll return to Brazil to face a charge of filing a false police report over an incident at a petrol station during the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Lochte told ABC’s “Good Morning America” his legal team is dealing with the situation, adding “we’re just trying to get this over with.”

Lochte admits he lied about having a gun held to his head during the incident at the Rio petrol station, where he and three other American swimmers had stopped to use a bathroom.

He once again apologised, but stopped short of saying the incident never happened. He told the program the weeks following it were the lowest point of his life.

Lochte says he has offered to reimburse fellow swimmer James Feigen for a nearly $US11,000 ($A14,530) fine Feigen paid to resolve legal issues and leave the country.

The interview came as the new season line–up of the network’s “Dancing with the Stars” was announced. Lochte will be dancing with Cheryl Burke during the show’s 23rd season.

He will compete against the likes of Vanilla Ice, “Brady Bunch” star Maureen McCormick and “Taxi” star Marilu Henner.
