Derby Day Tips: Son of a gun out to emulate father in Group 1 feature

Jockey Jordan Childs will look to create history on Saturday in the Victoria Derby.

The time-honoured three-year-old classic – which has been run since 1855 – is the highlight of perhaps the greatest day in Australian racing.

Four Group 1 events will be held on Saturday at Flemington, leading many to dub the day as racing’s very own ‘Grand Final day’.

Childs, 21, wants to emulate father Greg and win the $A1.5 million Victoria Derby, which would make the pair the first father-son duo to win the time-honoured three-year-old classic.

Greg, who is best known for his association with champions Sunline and Northerly, rode Second Coming to glory in the 1997 Derby.

And he repeated the dose two years later on Blackfriars.

“I thought Dad only won the race once, but he quickly pointed out to me that he won it twice,” Jordan, who is aboard $10 chance Greycliffe on Saturday, told The New Daily.

“It would be great to win it, just like Dad did.

“I’m really looking forward to it, it’s very exciting.”

Jordan will be competing in a Group 1 for just the second time in his fledgling career.

Greg, now 55, retired in 2008 after an illustrious 30-year career in the saddle.

He chalked up 2000 wins, of which 72 came at Group 1 level, including two Caulfield Cups and two Cox Plates.

And he is a mentor to Jordan and his biggest fan, taking great pleasure in watching his young son hone his skills.

“Dad will give me some advice; I’ll give him a call and go through the race with him,” Jordan explained.

“He’s been there and done that, he knows what it’s all about.”

On the back of his Group 1 Gloaming Stakes win last start, Sydney colt Ace High is the Derby favourite at $5.50.

It’s a wide open affair, however, with Tangled, Astoria, Main Stage, Sully and Weather With You all well fancied.
