Australia marches on at Netball World Cup

Australia continue to dominate their Netball World Cup title defence, with an 83-16 demolition of Barbados in their second pool match at Sydney’s Olympic Park.

Coach Lisa Alexander again mixed up her line-up but also allowed some combinations to settle on Saturday, as the Diamonds honed their form before Sunday’s top-ranked showdown with New Zealand.

The defending world champions got away in far crisper fashion than Friday night’s slow start against Trinidad and Tobago, snatching a turnover off Barbados’ first centre pass to rocket to 6-0.

Exceptional hands-over pressure and spatial awareness denied their ninth-ranked foes a goal for more than four minutes as the Aussies cruised to a 38-7 halftime lead.

Starting goal attack Erin Bell owned the circle with 21 goals, while Caitlin Thwaites had clearly sharpened her eye following Friday’s scratchy showing, racking up 17 of her own and strategically imprisoning Shonette Bruce high in the circle to allow space.

Though this was far from a testing contest for the Diamonds, ball placement was crucial given the presence of aerial defenders Rhe-Ann Niles and the competitive Bruce.

And young world titles debutants Kim Ravaillion and Paige Hadley didn’t disappoint, with the latter providing 36 feeds into a grateful circle.

In stark contrast to the towering 1.88cm Bruce was Barbados’ shooting playmaker Nikita Piggott, who is more than 10cm shorter than Laura Geitz and Sharni Layton but used it to her advantage to dart around and under the pair.

Alexander again gave Geitz the starting goal keeper bib, running Layton in at goal defence before replacing her with Rebecca Bulley in the third quarter.

The coach again emptied most of her bench to give Kim Green a run at wing attack and West Coast Fever combination Natalie Medhurst and Caitlin Bassett a go at goal attack and shooter.

Julie Corletto was the only player who watched the whole match from the sidelines as she continues a managed workload thanks to a niggly knee.

The win lifts the Diamonds’ astonishing international winning streak to 21 Test matches.
