New South Wales Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident that saw celebrity chef George Calombaris shove a Sydney FC fan after Sunday’s A-League Grand Final.

Calombaris, a judge on popular Network Ten television program Masterchef and passionate Melbourne Victory supporter, was on the Allianz Stadium pitch after the club’s defeat to Sydney in a tense penalty shootout.

And he responded furiously to taunts about the staff underpayment saga that saw him hit the headlines last month, storming from the pitch towards the fence before forcefully shoving a supporter.

Police were on the scene quickly, but video footage of the incident soon hit social media, prompting an apologetic statement from Calombaris on Monday.

New South Wales Police confirmed to The New Daily that although the victim was “uninjured”, they were investigating the alleged assault.

“Police are investigating after an alleged assault at Allianz Stadium about 8.50pm on Sunday,” they said.

“A 19-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by a 38-year-old man after a football game.

“Police have spoken to the men and will be investigating the incident further.

“Any witnesses who have not spoken to police should contact Crime Stoppers.”

Last month, the Herald Sun revealed the restaurant group which oversees Calombaris’ restaurant empire, MAdE Establishment, had underpaid 162 staff around $2.6 million over a six-year period — a sum that has now been repaid.

In the video, shot by The World Game and viewable below, Sydney fans can be heard shouting at him to “pay your staff, you dodgy bas***d”.

Calombaris said on Monday he was “not proud” of his response but that he took offence to comments about his family.

“I am really disappointed with what occurred last night,” he said.

“I was genuinely shocked when post-match football banter turned into personal abuse about my family.

“I regret the way in which I reacted, I am disappointed that I let it get to me, and I sincerely apologise for offending anyone.

“While I am not proud of my reaction to the situation, I was offended by a spectator yelling out abusive and derogatory comments about my family.

“I have spoken to Melbourne Victory FC and Football Federation Australia today to report the situation and I’m truly sorry that this has happened.”
