Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim has been taken to hospital after being hit in the back of the helmet by a bouncer during the final day of the first Test against New Zealand.

As physio staff from both sides attended to the 29-year-old just after midday on Monday (local time), an ambulance drove on to the Basin Reserve to transport him to Wellington Hospital.

Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal told reporters that Mushfiqur was “fine”, adding “He spoke to us. He has been taken [to hospital] for precaution”.

Mushfiqur, who was already batting with injured fingers on both hands, had been subject to a number of short balls from the New Zealand bowlers.

In the 43rd over of the innings, on 13, he was struck on the back of the helmet by a short ball from fast bowler Tim Southee.

He slowly went to the ground but then rolled over onto his back and was immediately attended to by medical staff from both teams before paramedics arrived. Mushfiqur was moving his arms and legs as he responded to treatment.

The captain, who scored 159 in the first innings, was on 13 when he left the field. Play was held up for about 15 minutes with the visitors in trouble in their second innings at 5-114, a lead of 170 runs.
