Conor McGregor’s much-talked about ‘super fight’ with Floyd Mayweather Jr could actually happen after the UFC star was granted a professional boxing licence.

McGregor has taken the mixed martial arts world by storm and is currently UFC’s lightweight world champion.

But a boxing match against the currently retired Mayweather Jr, who held a 49-0 record over his career, appears a much tougher prospect.

Talk of a potential fight between the two has raged for some time now and both have done their best to fan the flames.

But the closest sign that it could actually happen came on Thursday (AEDT) when it emerged that McGregor has been given an American boxing licence.

“He’s got a licence today and a federal ID,” California State Athletic Commission executive officer Andy Foster said to MMAFighting.com.

“He’s a California boxer now. He’s qualified.

“I’d love to see him fight in California. It just needs to be the right opponent.

“Certainly a high-level opponent. We’re happy to licence him. We’re happy he’s a California fighter.”

Earlier this week, McGregor’s manager, John Kavanagh told The Sun he would “put a few quid” on the fight happening.

McGregor goaded Mayweather Jr after defeating Eddie Alvarez in UFC 205 and said: “Much respect to Floyd. He’s a solid businessman.

“What he’s been able to do – he’s a f**ing animal at what he’s been able to do.

“As far as real fighting [though], pure unarmed combat, Floyd don’t want none of this.

“Give Floyd a shout. Tell him I’m coming.

“I want $US100 million to fight him under boxing rules because he’s afraid of a real fight.”

Mayweather Jr, who retired after a 2015 fight in which he beat Manny Pacquiao, told TMZ: “I didn’t know Conor McGregor was undefeated.

“I didn’t know he had a reign in MMA for 20 years and was undefeated and was world champion in five different weight classes. That’s something I didn’t know.

“So I guess you guys are telling me something new if you say he’s the Floyd Mayweather of the MMA.

“If you say he’s the Floyd Mayweather of the MMA, I’m trying to find out have you ever made $US300 million in one night?

“Have you ever made $US100 million in one night? Have you ever made $US70 million in one night?

“So as far as saying he’s the Floyd Mayweather of MMA – it’s OK to say it but it’s not true.”
