Disgraced AFL star Ben Cousins has allegedly been assaulted by fellow inmates in jail for refusing to take part in a football match.

The 38-year-old former West Coast Eagles captain was reportedly “set up” by a group of men inside the Perth jail after he said he would not join in the game, according to the Nine Network’s Footy Show on Thursday night.

The alleged attack comes about two months after Cousins was sentenced to one-year of imprisonment after pleading guilty to 11 offences including aggravated stalking, breaching a violence restraining order and drug possession.

The prison has refused to comment on the allegation, while a lawyer for Cousins told Seven News he was not assaulted for refusing to play.

More to come.
