Australia’s women have sunk to their first Test defeat to India, beaten by eight wickets on the last day of their one-off match in Mumbai.

After losing 7-55 to end their second innings, Alyssa Healy’s tourists could only set the hosts a target of 75 at Wankhede Stadium.

India claimed the victory with relative ease, with Smitri Mandhana hitting an unbeaten 38 in the fourth-innings chase.

Australia lost 5-28 on Sunday morning to be all out for 261, before dropping a crucial chance in the field as India went to lunch at 1-29 in pursuit of 75 for victory.

Kim Garth provided an early inroad when she had Shafali Verma caught behind for four in the first over of the hosts’ innings.

But Australia missed a golden opportunity to have India 2-9 when Beth Mooney dropped a sitter at first slip off Ashleigh Gardner with Richa Ghosh on 0.

The Wankhede Stadium pitch is staying low and proving difficult for scoring, but Australia will feel it let a golden opportunity slip to set a competitive total.

After a poor opening two days in Mumbai, the tourists had fought back to be 3-206 and with a lead of 19 late on Saturday evening.

But they lost their last seven wickets for 55 runs, with Tahlia McGrath (73) and Alyssa Healy (32) out late on day three.

Day four started in a nightmare fashion, with Gardner (7) lbw to a Pooja Vastrakar inswinger in the second over of the morning.

Only Annabel Sutherland offered any real resistance, producing several punches through the covers and a glorious on-drive.

But she was caught behind on 27, when an attempted sweep shot against Sneh Rana (4-63) ballooned off her glove and into the hands of Yastika Bhatia.

Alana King was bowled next ball by Rana when she played on, as Australia fell into further trouble.

Garth and Jess Jonassen were then bowled by fingerspinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2-42) to wrap up the innings.

Australia has not lost any of its six Tests since January 2014, while it was undefeated in all 10 previous matches in the format against India.

Three ODIs will follow in the next week, before the tour finishes with another three T20s.
