Michelle Payne involved in race fall in Mildura

Champion jockey Michelle Payne has been cleared of serious injury after a race fall in northern Victoria on Monday.

Payne fell from Dutch Courage, trained by her brother Patrick Payne, during race seven and was immediately attended to by medics, who opted to take her to hospital for further observation. She will remain at Mildura Base Hospital overnight for observation.

Payne, who famously won the 2015 Melbourne Cup, was understood to have full movement of her arms and legs after the fall.

According to punters.com.au, the horse Payne was riding clipped heels which resulted in her being dislodged.

Payne was conscious after the fall but complained of abdominal pain.

“Michelle Payne to go to hospital for observation, fully conscious and has movement of arms and legs, complaining of abdominal pain,” a Racing Victoria statement read.

Earlier in the day, Payne rode to victory upon Chamois Road and Matamanoa to complete a double for her brother.

The incident comes only hours after a nasty collision at a meet in Taree saw five horses clash and four jockeys taken to hospital.
