Comeback queen Belinda Hocking has upset world champion Emily Seebohm to claim the 200m backstroke at the Rio swimming trials in Adelaide on Wednesday night.

Refreshed after a six-month sabbatical, Hocking earned selection for her third Games with a world class two minutes, 06.49 seconds ahead of Seebohm (2:06.59).

Hocking’s winning time was the fastest in the world for the year – an extraordinary achievement considering the tough road back for the 25-year-old.

Hocking took a break after finishing 2014 as the world No.1 following 200m gold medal success at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacs against the mighty United States.

Then things went pear-shaped.

During a three-month period Hocking accidentally set herself on fire, suffered a knee dislocation and was concussed in a car crash.

Hocking took a break from swimming to reassess her life.

She finally returned to the pool after starting a teaching degree and becoming engaged.

Armed with nine months of training, Hocking appears ready to recapture her best.

Hocking admitted she would have been tempted to give away the sport for good if she missed the Rio cut at Adelaide.

“Once you are off the team it is a lot harder to get back on – but who knows now,” Hocking said.

“But it was my life journey so no matter what the result tonight I would have been happy with it.”
