World number 13 Adam Scott has broken through for his first PGA Tour title since 2014.

Scott took out the Honda Classic at Palm Beach by just one stroke, emerging victorious from a thrilling duel with Spaniard Sergio Garcia.

The Aussie held off his rival’s charge to finish with an even-par 70 in the final round, giving him an overall score of nine under.

It was a satisfying win for Scott, who recovered from a quadruple bogey in the third round to take out his first title since discarding his broomstick putter since the ban came into play at the start of the year.

Scott’s final round was up-and-down throughout, birdieing the first and fifth holes, only to bogey the ninth and 10th, before his 12th-hole birdie was cancelled out by another bogey on the 16th.

Luckily for the Australian, Garcia also bogeyed the 16th as Scott held on to his one-shot lead, before hitting an unerring shot right at the flag on the tricky 17th.

His putt attempt could only kiss the rim of the hole as Scott was forced to settle for par, but Garcia could only bogey as the lead increased to two shots.

The tournament looked signed, sealed and delivered when Garcia’s approach on the 18th sailed into the gallery, only for the Spaniard to scramble for birdie, but Scott could afford to two-putt for par and drink up the applause.

A further three shots adrift of Garcia, in a tie for third, were American pair Blayne Barber and Justin Thomas.

John Senden was the next best Aussie, tied for 10th at one under, while Stuart Appleby was four shots back from there in a tie for 37th.
