Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez have sent the football world into a frenzy with an outlandish penalty kick double act.

The Barcelona forwards were clearly enjoying themselves in their side’s 6-1 La Liga romp over Celta Vigo, and decided to experiment with a novel penalty technique in the 82nd minute.

With the European champions leading 3-1 at the time and playing some delectable football, Messi won the penalty when he was felled in the box after bamboozling a defender with some fancy footwork.

The Argentine placed the ball on the spot, seemingly focussed on slotting home his 300th goal in Spain’s top flight.

But nay, he did something very strange indeed, dishing the ball forwards and sideways for Suarez to pounce on.

The former Liverpool man proceeded to calmly slot past a flummoxed Celta Vigo goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez to make it 4-1 and send the Camp Nou crowd wild.

There were some who thought the audacious move was slightly in poor taste, though, in that it rubbed salt into poor Celta Vigo’s wounds with an unbecoming display of brass.

Celta Vigo coach Eduardo Berizzo dismissed such talk in the post-match press conference.

“Barca’s forwards always respect opponent. They’re hungry for goals, they can score however they want,” he said.
