Boland, Paris to debut as Marsh misses out

A mountain of runs didn’t do the trick, so now Shaun Marsh needs to rely on plan B if he is to win an ODI recall – the birth of a baby.

Marsh was the unlucky batsman to miss out when Australian captain Steve Smith named his XI for Tuesday’s one-day clash with India at the WACA.

Aaron Finch and David Warner will open the batting, with Smith, George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell and Mitch Marsh holding the fort in the middle order.

Emerging quicks Joel Paris and Scott Boland will make their international debuts, with Kane Richardson on standby.

Marsh scored a match-winning 49 against NZ in the day-night Test and a career-high 182 against the West Indies before being dropped from the Test team to accommodate the return of Usman Khawaja.

The 32-year-old continued his hot form in the BBL with 47, 76no, 63no, 4 and 28.

Marsh hasn’t played an ODI for almost a year and it seems his chances of winning selection this summer hinge on the birth of Warner’s second child.

Warner is expected to play in Perth and Brisbane but is likely to take leave after that to be by his wife’s side.

Smith said it was a hard decision to omit Marsh, especially considering the series opener is being played on the West Australian’s home turf.

“It’s a tough call on him,” Smith said on Monday.

“But the batters are the same batters we used in our last couple of one-dayers and they’re going to start and hopefully do a good job for us.

“Shaun’s been exceptional. He hasn’t whinged once. He’s taken it on the chin.

“He’s been great around the group.

“Hopefully every time he goes back (to domestic ranks) he can continue to dominate and keep scoring big runs and put his name up there.”

While Shaun Marsh has found runs easy to come by this summer, the same can’t be said for his brother Mitch. The 24-year-old has batted eight times for Australia for a highest score of 34.

However, most of those innings have come just before Australia have declared, meaning Mitch has often been forced to abandon his normal game in the pursuit of quick runs.

“He hasn’t had a great opportunity this summer,” Smith said.

“I think he’s only batted once or twice (where he’s had the opportunity to bat normally).

“I’ve been watching him quite a lot in the nets. I think he’s batting pretty well at the moment.

“He’s ready to go. If he gets the opportunity to go out and score some runs, hopefully he can make the most of it.”

Paris and Boland have the perfect chance to push their case for World Twenty20 selection during the current one-day series against India, which will feature five one-dayers and three T20s.

Boland, 26, was 12th man for two Tests this summer, while 23-year-old Paris is a star on the rise after finally overcoming a serious quad injury.
