Birighitti saves Newcastle blushes in draw

A class display from Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti ensured Newcastle kept in-form Adelaide to a scoreless draw at Hunter Stadium on Friday night.

The Reds had the better of chances in front of 7332 fans in the round 11 match but Birighitti, who has reportedly attracted interest from English Premier League clubs, proved the hero.

Birighitti smothered shots from Dylan McGowan (17th minute), James Jeggo (61st) and Bruce Djite (82nd). He also dived to tip a Djite strike around the post in the 90th minute.

It capped a frustrating night for Adelaide, who twice hit the woodwork with Marcelo Carrusca free kicks.

Newcastle’s best chance came in the 39th minute when Mateo Poljak’s header off a Milos Trifunovic cross thundered into the post.

Jets Jason Hoffman and Ben Kantarovski picked up their fifth yellow cards of the season and will miss the next round suspended.

The draw moves Newcastle to 13 points and Adelaide to 10.
