Hazlewood in, Siddle out for Gabba Test match

Peter Siddle’s resurgent performance in the final Ashes Test was not enough to earn him selection for the opener against New Zealand starting on Thursday, with Josh Hazlewood reclaiming his spot in the bowling line-up.

On the eve of the first Test at the Gabba, captain Steve Smith said Hazlewood would line up in a three-pronged pace attack alongside Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc, with Nathan Lyon remaining the sole spinner.

Hazlewood’s only other Test in Brisbane was his debut against India last year, during which he took 5 for 68 in his first innings and finished the match with seven wickets.

The 24-year-old was ‘rested’ for the fifth and final Ashes Test in England and Siddle, who Hazlewood had replaced against India at the Gabba in December, returned and finished the match with 6 for 67.

“It’s obviously disappointing for him [Siddle]. He bowled extremely well in the last Test match at The Oval,” Australia skipper Steve Smith said.

“But that’s the team we’ve gone with.

“Josh Hazlewood had a lot of success out here last year against India.”

Smith also confirmed his move down the order to number four, with Usman Khawaja back in at first drop, while all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will bat at number six ahead of wicketkeeper Peter Nevill.

For the Black Caps, Doug Bracewell, who took 9 for 60 in his last Test against Australia during New Zealand’s 2011 tour, was named ahead of fellow seamer Matt Henry.
