Jamal Idris’ NRL career hangs in limbo after the livewire centre successfully requested a release from the Penrith Panthers to take an indefinite break from the game.

The 25-year-old, who had one year left to run on his NRL contract at the club, played just 28 games in his two years at the club as he battled injuries.

“I love the game of rugby league but just at the moment I need to take some time away,” he said.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Panthers but I did not want to continue playing if I couldn’t guarantee giving them 100 per cent.”

Idris missed five weeks for the club in 2014 when Penrith granted him time off to deal with personal issues.

“The club has been working closely with the NRL this week to put a support system in place to help Jamal deal with some personal issues,” a statement said at the time.

“The club stresses that this matter has nothing to do with disciplinary action.

“The Panthers and the NRL are fully supportive of Jamal and will be assisting him during this important period.”

The former Bulldogs and Titans player, who has scored 43 tries in 131 NRL matches, represented New South Wales in 2010 and Australia in 2011.

Idris was recently rumoured to be in discussions with the Melbourne Storm.
