Travis Dean makes Sheffield Shield history

A record two unbeaten centuries from first-class debutant Travis Dean have given Victoria a stunning nine-wicket Sheffield Shield win over Queensland at the MCG.

Dean wrote himself into the storied history of the competition by becoming the first man to make centuries in both innings on debut in 123 years.

The 23-year-old batted with poise and patience on the fourth and final day, resuming on 23 to make an unbeaten 109, adding to his 154no from his first innings.

The remarkable accomplishment helped the Bushrangers chase down their target of 229 with ease for the loss of one wicket.

Opening batsman Rob Quiney made 54 before Marcus Stoinis contributed well with 66no.

Dean’s slice of history was threatened by Stoinis, who raced to 50 off 80 balls, putting Victoria in danger of reaching the total and stranding Dean with an unbeaten knock in the nineties.

But the 23-year-old upped his run rate to ensure no such drama, bringing up his hundred with a terrific pull shot and boundary.

Dean is not the only Australian to achieve two centuries on his first-class debut, with Arthur Morris doing so in 1940/41 for New South Wales.

But Morris’ achievement came during the Second World War during the Shield’s recess.

Dean is one of six batsmen in the history of the sport to make twin hundreds in their maiden first-class match.

With rain threatening to impact the final day, the match was evenly poised at the start of play with the Bushrangers resuming at 0-38.

But neither the threat of showers nor opening bowlers Mark Steketee or James Hopes could make inroads into the Victorian top order as Dean and Quiney reached half-centuries.

Quiney was dismissed lbw by Ben Cutting after he and Dean notched a century partnership.

Stoinis picked up where Quiney left off, providing a fine foil to his history-making partner and setting up a famous victory.

Victoria were in the contest thanks to a bold day-three declaration from captain Matthew Wade.

Chasing Queensland’s first-innings total of 444, Wade brought in his side at 3-319 and his attack then skittled the Bulls for 103.

The final night session of the first day-night Shield match wasn’t needed for Victoria to achieve their win, with Dean hitting the winning runs with another boundary before 6pm.
