A 28-year-old Australian boxer has died in hospital after being knocked out during an IBF super-featherweight regional title fight.

Father-of-two, Davey Browne Jr, was floored by a punch from his opponent, Filipino Carlo Magali, and left unconscious at Ingleburn RSL club.

It was about 30 seconds from the twelfth and final round when he regained consciousness, but then collapsed from his stool.

Browne Jr was rushed to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition suffering from brain injuries.

He did not regain consciousness. A post-mortem examination will be conducted.

Australian National Boxing Federation president John McDougall described the scene he witnessed as “horrific”.

“He dropped right in front of me, I could’ve reached out and touched him,” Mr McDougall told Fairfax Media.

“The Filipino hit him with a crashing punch and he was out cold before he hit the floor.”

Brain injury in sport is becoming an increasing concern.

The problem is highlighted in the new film Consciousness, based on the NFL’s ongoing problem with head injuries and resulting brain trauma among former players.
