An international cricketer and his wife are being hunted in Bangladesh for the alleged abuse of a young domestic helper, according to reports.

Earlier in September, the unidentified girl reported that Bangladesh international bowler Shahadat Hossain and his wife physically tortured her and left on the street of capital city Dhaka, reported CNN.

Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told CNN the girl had substantial injuries including several dislocations, swollen eyes and extensive bruising.

Mr Shahadat and his wife have allegedly fled their home and are on the run. Police have deployed a team to locate the pair.

Media manager for the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Rabeed Imam said: “The Bangladesh Cricket Board is informed about the allegations against national cricketer Shahadat Hossain and his wife of assaulting their 11-year-old maid.

“The police are looking into the matter and it is too early to jump to any final conclusion. In any situation the incident is (the) cricketer’s personal issue and the board has nothing to do with it but yes, we condemn the happening.”

Hossain, 29, debuted for the national team in 2005 and has played 36 Tests and 51 one-day internationals, taking more than 100 wickets over the formats.

Police are also raiding the bowler’s ancestral village and his father-in-law’s house. The parents of the alleged victim are yet to be found.
