No Australians left in the US Open grand slam

There are no Australians left in the US Open singles draw after Sam Stosur went down to her Italian bogey player Flavia Pennetta.

Italian 26th seed Pennetta reached her sixth US Open quarter-final on Tuesday (AEST) with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Stosur, the 2011 champion.

“I practised a lot in Spain and it’s not too difficult for me to play this type of player,” Pennetta said after her win.

The Italian has been a career-long nemesis of Stosur. Their head-to-head record is now 7-0 in Pennetta’s favour.

Stosur made a confident enough start to the match, holding her opening service game with an ace down the middle.

The 22nd seed garnered her only break-point chances of the match in the second game of the match, but Pennetta saved from 15-40.

The missed opportunity proved telling as Pennetta grabbed the sole break of the first set with a booming backhand return winner in the fifth game.

Stosur played a great game with Pennetta serving for the set at 5-4 but the Italian again hung on to close out the set.

There was also only one service break in the second set, but it again went against Stosur before Pennetta finished the match off after just 78 minutes.

It was the second year in a row Pennetta had ended Australia’s singles hopes at the Open after she bundled out Casey Dellacqua in the round of 16 in 2014.

It was the 33-year-old Pennetta’s seventh win in seven meetings against the 22nd seed.

She will face either Czech fifth seed Petra Kvitova or British qualifier Johanna Konta for a place in the semi-finals.
