Hodge caught drink-driving

Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge has been caught drink driving just a week away from the AFL finals.

Hodge, who is suspended for this weekend’s match against Carlton, was stopped by police while on his way home from a social event on Thursday night.

The incident is the latest controversy in an undisciplined year from the Hawks star, who was suspended for three matches for a crude hit on Andrew Swallow, and most recently was banned for two weeks for bumping Chad Wingard high.

Hodge had been given club approval to attend the social function, and the 31-year-old says he had three to four drinks on the night.

“I thought I was no problem to drive,” he told the Seven Network.

“Even when I pulled up to the breathalyser, I was very confident I was no issue.”

On top of a fine of $450, Hodge lost 10 demerit points.

He would never have gotten behind the wheel if he thought the drinks had put him over the limit, he says.

“I made a silly call, an error of judgment, and feel like an idiot.”

Hawthorn football manager Chris Fagan told The Herald Sun Hodge was sorry for the incident.

“Luke understands that as a father of two young boys and a leader of our footy club he is in a position to set an example for the community in regards to road safety, and is extremely remorseful,” Fagan said.

“He had a couple of drinks throughout the night and thought he was OK to drive, but makes no excuse for his poor judgment.

“This is a reminder for our entire playing group and the community that when in doubt, to take public transport or catch a taxi.

“We are disappointed in Luke’s error of judgement, the club has spoken to him and the police about the matter and we believe the penalty he has received is appropriate.”
