Fremantle march on at the top, Roos beat Demons

Big men Aaron Sandilands and Jonathon Griffin have made their mark in Fremantle’s clinical and commanding 37-point AFL victory over St Kilda on Sunday.

The rucks combined for four goals in the 15.6 (96) to 8.11 (59) win, which keeps the Dockers on track for the minor premiership.

It was one-way traffic early in the match, with Ross Lyon’s side showing why they find themselves 10 points clear of the pack.

Fremantle inflicted the killer blows swiftly and with precision.

From their first seven marks inside 50, Fremantle kicked seven unanswered goals from the boots of seven different players.

By half-time the contest was over, with Matthew Pavlich and Hayden Crozier joining the rucks with two goals as the Dockers surged to a 12 goals to two lead.

Earlier, Shaun Higgins and Lindsay Thomas led North Melbourne to a 35-point AFL win after a big scare from Melbourne.

Higgins and Thomas kicked two goals apiece in a seven-goal last quarter at the MCG as the Kangaroos pulled away for the 19.13 (127) to 14.8 (92) win.

The Demons drew to within two points late in the third term and were only eight points behind early in the last quarter.

But North were never headed in a pulsating match and their five-game winning streak means they have replaced Richmond in sixth on the ladder.

Higgins was best afield with 31 disposals, while Thomas kicked five goals.

Melbourne’s rising star Jesse Hogan kicked four goals in another impressive performance and Chris Dawes kicked four.

Meanwhile Greater Western Sydney’s finals hopes remain alive and well after they ran away from Essendon at Spotless Stadium.

After an even first half, the Giants kicked away in the third quarter, eventually posting a 14.9 (93) to 8.13 (61) win.

The win was notable for the comeback of Jon Patton, but the Giants lost Tom Scully, who was subbed out with a shoulder injury.

Stephen Coniglio was the victim of a heavy bump from Adam Cooney late on, and the Bomber was reported for the hit.
