Video: Daredevil rides dirt bike over waves in Tahiti

Australian daredevil Robbie Maddison has achieved the incredible feat of riding huge waves in Tahiti – on a dirt bike.

Maddison has just released a video titled Robbie Maddison Pipe Dream showing unbelievable footage of him riding his dirt bike onto huge waves in Tahiti in April this year.

Famous for stunts like jumping his bike over a football field and backflipping over the opened Tower Bridge in London, riding his bike across waves was his most ambitious stunt yet and took two years of preparation.

Maddison’s aim was to ride Teahupoo, the scene of spectacular surfing vision over the years and the location of the next contest of the World Surf League later this month.

Dressed in motocross gear atop a dirt bike fitted with skis and an airbag, 34-year-old Maddison rides past the line-up of surfers onto a sizeable Teahupoo wave.

Maddison, a keen surfer, said in April he was first towed into the wave on his board to get used to the break at Teahupoo.

A day later he attempted the stunt on his bike after preparing for the attempt for two years. The first take was a flop with Maddison sinking in the whitewater.

Maddison persisted and switched to the less crowded Tahitian waves of Papara. Spectacular vision shows Maddison nearly swallowed by the whitewater of a huge wave at Papara.

“I don’t think the photos or video show how physical it was,” Maddison told Surfer magazine.

“You can’t see that when the wave broke right behind me, I honestly thought that might be the end of my life.

“I’ve never felt like I was in the wrong place at the wrong time more than I did right there. It was a near-death experience.”
