Port thump Saints, Dogs destroy Bombers

Port Adelaide kept their AFL finals hopes alive with a 63-point belting of a sloppy St Kilda on Sunday.

The Power remain 12th, but just six premiership points shy of the top eight, after a 17.10 (112) to 6.13 (49) victory at Adelaide Oval.

Port forward Chad Wingard booted four goals and teammates Robbie Gray (37 disposals) and Justin Westhoff (23 disposals, two goals) were instrumental in a win which came with a cost – midfielder Ollie Wines dislocated a shoulder.

Wines was hurt in the first term of a match preceded by a ceremony in support of Sydney star Adam Goodes.

Indigenous greats Nicky Winmar, Gavin Wanganeen and Byron Pickett greeted both captains before play, and then Port’s players made St Kilda pay for their waste.

Midway through the second quarter, the Saints had 1.9, including five rushed behinds.

And at halftime they trailed by 25 points despite entering their attacking 50m arc five more times than the Power.

St Kilda’s skill errors were pounced on by Port, who kicked the initial three goals of the third term to stretch out to a defining 44-point lead and then coasted to victory.

With Gray, captain Travis Boak (29 disposals) and backmen Hamish Hartlett (27 possessions) and Matthew Broadbent prominent, the Power banked an eighth win of the season before a 36,850-strong home crowd.

Port’s defenders, led by Jack Hombsch who kept Josh Bruce goal-less until he scored after the final siren, applied a strangle on St Kilda’s attackers, with midfielder Leigh Montagna (two goals) the visitor’s sole multiple goalscorer.

The Saints, who were well served by Montagna, David Armitage (22 possessions) and Jarryn Geary (23 disposals), also lost ruckman Billy Longer, who was substituted because of a suspected knee injury.

Meanwhile, Stewart Crameri  kicked seven goals against his old side as the Western Bulldogs thumped Essendon by 87 points.

On a disappointing day for the Bombers, Crameri eclipsed his old side’s total score with his career-best personal tally of 7.2 in the 19.13 (127) to 5.10 (40) demolition.

With percentage likely to play a big role as sides jockey for positions in the top eight, the big win could prove pivotal as the Bulldogs storm towards September.

Lachie Hunter continued his fine run of form with a 37-possession performance, but the headline act was the Dogs’ forward line that also featured four-goal bags from Jake Stringer and Tory Dickson.

The Bombers had few winners in a largely lacklustre display on Sunday, but Dyson Heppell was valiant with 32 touches and nine clearances, while Brent Stanton gathered 34 possessions and kicked a goal.

And star GWS forward Jeremy Cameron was left with a bloody nose as his side crashed to a 21-point defeat to Fremantle at Domain Stadium.

A dazed Cameron was forced from the field late in the opening term after copping an elbow from Dockers defender Zac Dawson.

Dawson, playing his first match of the year, is almost certain to come under scrutiny from the AFL’s match review panel over the incident, which occurred while both players were lying on the ground after competing for a ball.

Dawson wasn’t facing Cameron when he swung his right elbow back, but the incident still looked ugly enough to warrant closer attention.

Cameron required extensive bandaging around his head to stem the bleeding, and he gave Dawson a big spray when he returned to the field for the start of the second quarter.

The 22-year-old’s nose bled throughout the match, and he finished with just two goals as the Dockers ran out 12.12 (84) to 9.9 (63) winners.

Dockers goalsneak Michael Walters booted four goals, while Aaron Sandilands was a force in the ruck.

Fremantle dominated most of the key stats throughout the contest, but their sloppy execution kept GWS in the contest until midway through the third quarter.
