A local school principal was thrilled to take over after Robert Allenby fired his caddy in a heated mid-round dispute at the Canadian Open.

Allenby and caddy Mick Meddelmo clashed over a club choice halfway through the round on Thursday.

The spat occurred after Meddelmo insisted Allenby use an 8-iron rather than a 7-iron, the PGA Tour website reported.

The four-time PGA-winner’s ball ended up in a creek and he triple-bogied the hole.

What happened next is unclear, with some reports saying Allenby sacked the caddy and others reporting Meddelmo quit.

According to Allenby, the bad advice was the last straw in a series of incidents.

Allenby claims he told Meddelmo, “That’s it, you’re sacked. I will never have you caddie again.”

Speaking to Fox Sports, Meddelmo alleged Allenby had called him a “fat c***” multiple times, and threatened to have him banned from the tour for life.

“I said to him, ‘I dare you to say that again’. We were yelling each other a bit at this stage,” Meddelmo said.

“There were a few innuendos and he slapped the putter back in my hand harder than he should have.”

Meddelmo claimed Allenby was well known for mistreating caddies.

“He’s just a bully. He likes to bully caddies. You couldn’t get away with that in any workplace in the world, but somehow he thinks it’s appropriate on a golf course,” Meddelmo said.

“It’s the worst I’ve ever heard. But it’s not like I’m the first guy this has happened to with him. I’m the fourth caddie to walk off the golf course with him.”

The only clear winner in the spat was a local school principal who offered to take over after the split.

Sixty-one-year-old Tom Fraser called out to Allenby and offered to caddy his last nine holes.

“To my surprise he said, ‘Come on,’” a clearly excited Fraser told media.

“I waved at my friends, gave them the thumbs up. Sharing the stories with them afterwards was great,” he said.

Unfortunately, Mr Fraser’s efforts weren’t enough to turn Allenby’s bad day around, and the golfer confirmed to officials that he would be withdrawing from the tournament.
