Franklin, Tippett accept one-match suspensions

Sydney forwards Lance Franklin and Kurt Tippett accepted one-match suspensions on Monday, while Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell escaped penalty for his injection gesture.

The Swans will feel lucky after the AFL’s match review panel (MRP) took a lenient look at the indiscretions of their star forward pair.

Franklin was offered a one-game ban for his high bump on Richmond’s Shane Edwards during the second quarter of the Tigers’ come-from-behind 18-point win on Friday night.

The MRP assessed the incident as careless conduct with medium impact to the head, giving the ex-Hawk a one-game sanction with an early guilty plea.

Tippett received the same penalty for a late elbow on Richmond’s Dylan Grimes.

Reported for striking, Tippett’s hit was also viewed as careless conduct with medium impact to the head.

Unsurprisingly, Sydney accepted both suspensions quickly.

Both players will miss Thursday night’s home clash against Port Adelaide at the SCG.

Hawks star Mitchell was not cited for his gesture in reference to Essendon’s supplements saga when the two sides clashed at the MCG on Saturday.

Mitchell was criticised by Essendon coach James Hird after the match, who claimed his conduct was “naive” and “idiotic”.

In a post-match interview, Mitchell said he regretted his actions.

Brisbane ruckman Stefan Martin was hit with the most severe ban after being charged with striking with an elbow to the throat of Adelaide’s Luke Brown.

Martin’s hit was classified as intentional conduct with medium impact to the head and neck and he can accept a two-game suspension with an early guilty plea.

Gold Coast’s Andrew Raines can take a $1000 fine with an early plea after being found guilty of striking Carlton’s Patrick Cripps.

Other matters assessed saw a clash between Sydney’s Adam Goodes and Richmond’s Taylor Hunt thrown out, while a case between Nathan Gordon and Kieren Jack from the same match was also dismissed.
