Geelong’s Steve Johnson will escape with a $1,000 fine for engaging in rough conduct against Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell in their round one clash.

Johnson was placed on report by the emergency umpire following a stray elbow into Mitchell’s back that left the Hawk on the ground for almost a minute in the Hawks’ 62-point win at the MCG on Monday.

Johnson was offered the fine by the match review panel for an early guilty plea, which would allow him to play on Sunday against Fremantle in round two.

Under the new match review system, a first low-end offence results in a $1500 fine, reduced to $1000 for an early guilty plea.

The match review panel now issues fines for incidents that would have resulted in a one-game suspension under the old system.

Geelong said they expect Johnson to plead guilty and accept the fine.

On Monday night Mitchell described the hit as a ‘glancing blow’ and said it did not deserve a suspension.

This is Johnson’s 17th report or citing by the AFL tribunal system.

The tribunal will not sit Tuesday evening, with all players reported accepting their sanctions.

Richmond’s Brett Deledio and Gold Coast’s Matt Shaw will each miss one match after entering early guilty pleas to their engaging in rough conduct charges.

Collingwood’s Jamie Elliott, Fremantle’s Zac Clarke and Port Adelaide’s Brad Ebert were all fined $1,000 for respective tripping charges, while the Power’s Tom Jonas accepted the same sanction for striking the Dockers’ Chris Mayne.
