Pair charged over NRL riot

Two men have been charged with assault after violence erupted at the NRL grand final rematch between the Canterbury Bulldogs and Sydney Rabbitohs at Sydney’s Olympic Stadium.

An NRL official was taken to hospital with a suspected broken shoulder after being struck by a bottle by Canterbury fans as the Good Friday showdown with South Sydney ended amid ugly scenes.

A last-gasp penalty from Bryson Goodwin in front of the posts sealed a dramatic 18-17 win for the Rabbitohs.

Canterbury was so incensed by the decision to award a penalty, after James Graham caught the leg of Adam Reynolds as he tried to charge down a field goal attempt in the final minute, that prop David Klemmer verbally abusing referee Gerard Sutton and was sin-binned.

After the final siren, officials were showered with plastic water bottles by a section of the crowd as they walked up the tunnel.

Darren Alchin slipped after being hit and hurt his shoulder as he hit the ground.

Police said they were called to the stadium at about 4:30pm on Friday after reports of a domestic assault.

Officers spoke to the parents of a boy and the a 22-year-old male relative.

Police allege that the relative pushed the boy to the ground, causing him to hit his face.

He was charged with common assault and given strict conditions to appear at Burwood Local Court on Thursday.

At 6:30pm police were called back to the ground and found a 21-year-old man on the ground being treated for a cut above his eye.

Police allege a 38-year-old man shoulder charged the man from behind causing him to fall to the ground.

He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and given conditional bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on April 28.

Police are also continuing their investigation into bottle throwing at match officials within the stadium.
