A fire has damaged the home of former AFL player Daniel Kerr’s estranged wife, where Kerr has been staying after being granted bail on criminal charges.

Police and firefighters were called to the scene of the home on Harborne Street in the Perth suburb of Wembley after reports of a fire at the rear of the building just before 6:15pm.

It took three crews about 10 minutes to extinguish the blaze at the property, which is owned by Kerr’s wife Natasha Pozo.

About $100,000 damage, mainly from smoke, was caused.

The cause of the fire was deemed suspicious by a Department of Fire and Emergency Services’ fire investigation officer. The police arson squad were expected to attend the scene.

Kerr, 31, played for the West Coast Eagles, recruited from the WAFL East Fremantle club in 2001, before retiring in 2013.

He was twice runner-up for the Brownlow Medal.

In January the father of two pleaded not guilty to endangering the lives of two people over allegations he poured flammable liquid inside a house in the Perth suburb of Glendalough.

On Friday, his bail conditions were adjusted to allow him to move to the Western Australian town of Denmark, about 420 kilometres south of Perth, to play for a local team.

His bail conditions included a night time curfew however his lawyer John Prior asked for that to be lifted because of his client’s work and football commitments.

On Monday, a Western Australian newspaper published an interview with Kerr where he said he was not “totally changed” but hoped to stay out of trouble and give back to the community.

He is due back in court later this month when a trial date may be set for those charges.
