Will SBS give up its football coverage?

SBS is looking to dump its soccer coverage to make up for funding cuts, Fairfax has reported.

The broadcaster is trying to shake off its niche status, according to the report, and stands to make windfall gains by selling its rights to broadcast the next two world cups.

The decision has not been finalised and The New Daily is awaiting confirmation from the broadcaster.

Fairfax suggests SBS’s UEFA Champions League coverage could be moved to pay TV channels Fox Sports, ESPN or Al Jazeera.

A-League coverage may not find space on Friday nights amid AFL coverage, according to reports.

“Tentative discussions have been held with other free-to-air broadcasters about offloading their A-League commitments for the next two seasons,” the report says.
