Socceroos legend Mark Bresciano has announced his retirement from international football after 84 Socceroos appearances.

Bresciano made his debut for Australia in their historic 1-0 win over then-world champions France at the 2001 Confederations Cup, and was a part of their historic 2015 Asian Cup win.

Perhaps his most famous contribution to the Socceroos was scoring the goal in their 1-0 win over Uruguay in 2005 which sent the two-leg tie into a penalty shoot-out, and ultimately sent Australia to their first World Cup in 32 years.

Bresciano plies his trade for Al-Gharafa in Qatar, but spent the bulk of his club career in Italy – playing for Empoli, Parma, Palermo and Lazio.

His football career bagan with Victorian side Bulleen Lions and he later played for Carlton.

Bresciano phoned national team coach Ange Postecoglou over the weekend to inform him of the decision.

“It is with an element of sadness but a lot of pride that I have decided to retire from the Socceroos,” Bresciano said.

“Playing for my country in the sport I love has been an amazing experience and something I have cherished but never taken for granted.

“I have been fortunate enough to wear the Socceroo shirt at every major football tournament, meet some tremendous people, shared the highs and lows with some great players, and capped it all off by helping us win the 2015 Asian Cup.

“It has been an unforgettable journey with a lot of positive memories but I feel it is time to let this fantastic group of young players continue to take the Socceroos forward.”
