The Australian Open Daily Deuce: day 11

In our Australian Open column, The Daily Deuce, we reflect on the drama you might have missed on and off the court, as well as the sartorial triumphs and missteps of the sporting elite.

Here’s what captured our attention on day 11 …

Dream coaches

On Thursday, retired Bosnian player Amer Delic tweeted his desire for Andre Agassi to return to tennis as a coach, describing him as “the most physical chess player of all time”.

Delic’s tweet got us thinking – which retired stars would you love to see coaching? Boris Becker, Amelie Mauresmo and countless others have made the switch, but there are plenty more on the sidelines bursting with mentor potential.

Here are our picks for dream tennis coaches and the players they should pair with: coaches

John McEnroe

With: Andy Murray

Why? They could compete for who could scream at each other loudest.

Steffi Graf

With: Caroline Wozniacki

Why? Graf could help Wozniacki finally reach her full potential.

Bjorn Borg

With: Anyone

Why? Purely because he would bring back the headband.

Pete Sampras

With: Roger Federer

Why? Because that much greatness in such close proximity may destroy the universe.

Mis-gai-ded?

Gai Waterhouse shines every year at the Melbourne Cup – it’s her event. However, during her Thursday visit to Melbourne Park she seemed to get a little confused and wound up looking like she was spending a day with the fillies.

In her extravagant wide-brimmed hat, Waterhouse looked more suited to the Emirates Marquee on Oaks Day than the women’s semi-finals.

We wouldn’t want to be sitting behind her either. 2015 Australian Open - Day 11

The next Serena?

Madison Keys hasn’t been shy about sharing the fact that Serena Williams is her career inspiration. Despite Serena’s semi-final win over the 19-year-old, could Keys be on her way to following in her heroine’s footsteps?

After all, the two have a fair amount in common – they’re both American, there’s three centimetres in height between them, they live just 48km from each other in Florida and they both share a love of fluoro clothing. Plus, they get along like a house on fire.

After their match, Williams told media: “She [Keys] is obviously a great player. It’s great to see her doing so well. She’ll be winning Grand Slams soon.” A possible coach/player combo further down the line? Fingers crossed. Screen Shot 2015-01-29 at 5.45.21 PM
