Bernard Tomic slams ‘ridiculous’ Open scheduling after Berdych thrashing

Bernard Tomic has labelled Australian Open scheduling as ‘ridiculous’ following his fourth-round loss to Tomas Berdych on Sunday.

The Australian player said he was baffled by the scheduling of matches during this year’s open, which saw many young players kept well clear of Rod Laver Arena and relegated to outside courts.

Only Lleyton Hewitt and Samantha Stosur made it to Melbourne Park’s centre court, playing both their matches there before suffering second-round exits.

Rising juniors Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis missed out, as did Sam Groth, Marinko Matosevic and women’s seed Casey Dellacqua.

“I think the scheduling was like ridiculous this year. Like not just from my side, but for many players,” Tomic told reporters.

“I don’t know who was in charge of the schedule. Really, some of the matches I saw, it was just like, ‘wow’.

“From what I heard in the locker room, and not just myself, like the scheduling was a bit funny.

Tomic said he didn’t mind that he and young gun Nick Kyrgios hadn’t been scheduled to play at Rod Laver Arena, but other players had mentioned it.

“I’m not going to complain from my side, but on behalf of the people I talked to, they say it as well. It’s not just me saying it. You guys have seen, as well.”

Tomic lost the first four games against Czech seventh seed Berdych, before going on to lose the second set tiebreak.

The 22-year-old said he was now focused on getting inside the top 20 after falling from 27th seed in 2012 to 124th last July.

“I’m happy on court. That’s the main thing. Enjoying tennis. If you enjoy the sport, respect the game, the game will give back to you,” he said.
