Tim Cahill snubbed for FIFA goal award

The goal of Tim Cahill’s career won’t be the goal of the year.

Cahill’s stunning volley for the Socceroos against the Netherlands at the World Cup was one of 10 initial contenders for FIFA’s Goal of the Year award, but world football’s governing body has left it off its final shortlist of three.

One spectacular World Cup volley did make the cut for the 2104 Puskas Award – James Rodriguez’s chest, turn and hit for Colombia against Uruguay.

Robin van Persie’s diving header for the Netherlands against Spain also made it through, but the other nominated goal came in the less exalted surroundings of the Ireland women’s national league.

With her back to goal, Stephanie Roche juggled the ball from right boot to left before spinning and hitting a volley from outside the box for Peamount United against Wexford Youths.

“Yessssss!! Come on!! So happy right now, thank u to EVERYONE who has voted for me! ?????? oh and if you’s could keep voting please!????” Roche wrote on Twitter.

The winner will be announced next month.
