Honesty the best policy for Beale: Cheika

Wallabies head coach Michael Cheika insists the team can help Kurtley Beale regain support for the right reasons rather than be “maligned for the wrong ones”.

Beale was named as a replacement against Ireland for his first Test appearance since dropped over the text message scandal.

Cheika was questioned whether he was the person to but Beale back on track, but the Waratahs Super Rugby winning coach said that no player is going to be 100 per cent perfect.

“When he came to the Waratahs I never claimed I was going to be his social worker,” Cheika said.

“I’m just a rugby coach. So, honesty, straightforwardness, directness, putting him exactly in the picture of what’s required and what’s not needed.

Cheika said being honest with him is the best way to get the best out of Beale.

“No one’s ever going to be 100 per cent perfect, me included, there’s no doubt there,” he said.

“But if you’re honest more often than not and it’s in the open, then you can usually get a resolution.

“There’s no excuses for what happened, and I know that in the time that he was with us in the Waratahs he was impeccable, but there’s still no excuse for what happened.

“It was inappropriate, he’s been through that process and got himself back on track now and fit, and he’s over here to play.”

“Hopefully we’ll be able to help him regain a bit more support for the right reasons, and not be maligned for the wrong ones.”

Beale met up with the rest of the squad last Sunday having spent time in Australia getting fit.

Cheika stated that Beale impressed in training and he picked him on the bench this week due to his versatility.

It is understood Beale is yet to pay the $45,000 fine sanctioned for his lewd text message to former Wallabies manager Di Patston.

“I didn’t know he hadn’t paid his fine, I look after the footy things,” Cheika said.

“So I’m sure that it will get looked after. There is certainly no one trying to cheat the system.”
