The Socceroos have suffered a double blow ahead of next week’s final Asian Cup warm-up match, with defender Mark Milligan and midfielder Terry Antonis ruled out.

Neither Melbourne Victory captain Milligan nor Sydney FC young gun Antonis will make the trip to Osaka for the November 18 friendly against Japan after being deemed unfit through injury.

Milligan was ruled out on Tuesday after failing to bounce back from a knee injury suffered during last weekend’s A-League match against the Newcastle Jets.

His withdrawal was delayed for a day to see if the knee improved.

In a cruel twist, Antonis was injured in a minor car accident while driving to Sydney Airport to travel to Japan on Sunday evening.

He was taken to hospital with head and neck pain, but released later that night after undergoing scans that cleared him of any major injury.

Socceroo medical staff and coach Ange Postecoglou decided it was not in Antonis’ best interests to fly to Japan.

Postecoglou named Swiss-based midfielder Oliver Bozanic to come in for Antonis but chose not to replace Milligan, reducing his squad to 22 for their week-long training camp ahead of the match.

Sydney FC say they will monitor his recovery and follow the FFA concussion policy before allowing Antonis to return to the field.
