Benaud, 84, told Channel Nine that the cancers on his head and face were the result of playing cricket for decades without a hat or sunscreen.

A former charismatic Australian captain, Benaud has long been the voice of summer on Channel Nine for generations.

Benaud made the comments at Nine’s season launch on Monday at the SCG.

He has recorded a promo for this summer’s season of cricket, although his planned return to the commentary box in January will be health-dependant.

His did not commentate on any games last summer after crashing his car on the way back from a game of golf, which left him with two crushed vertebrae.

He urged people to take precautions to protect themselves in the sun.

“I recommend to everyone they wear protection on their heads,” Benaud said.

“Eighty-four-year olds don’t seem to mend as well as they used to.

“When I was a kid, we never ever wore a cap. I wish I had. You live and learn as you go along.”
