Khan savages Aussies with another century

Unwanted for Pakistan’s one-day series against Australia earlier this month, 36-year-old Younis Khan was unsure if he’d even make himself available for the two-Test series that followed.

But Younis scored two centuries in this week’s Dubai Test, becoming the first player since New Zealand’s Glenn Turner in 1974 to achieve the feat against Australia.

In doing so, the 92-Test veteran set a new record for most centuries by a Pakistan batsman, taking his tally to 26 on Saturday’s fourth day in Dubai.

“I had thought that it was easy to quit,” right-hander Younis said of his recent absence.

“It was an easy option but I have never chosen the easier option in my life.

“In 2004 we did not have a number three and coach Bob Woolmer asked me to bat at number three.

“He told me that I have to face Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Shane Warne so it was easy not to do.

“But I have chosen a challenge for me, always.”

Younis said his 26th hundred was a very nice feeling.

“I had listened to the criticism that a top player has no hundred against Australia,” he said.

“Back home when I was not in the one-day squad, there was a lot of talk about myself that whether I am available for the Tests or not.

“At one point I was thinking not to go for the Test matches because Australia is a top ranking team.

“But my friends and family motivated me and told me that if you can make it, to do something for the team it would be good.

“I am a proud Pakistani.”

Younis moves past great names on the list of Pakistan century-makers including Inzamam-ul-Haq (25), Mohammad Yousuf (24) and Javed Miandad (23).

“The feeling is good,” Younis said.

“I had never thought that I will cross Javed Miandad, the great Yousuf or great Inzamam.”

Australia captain Michael Clarke says Younis is a classy strokeplayer.

“He’s a very good player and has been for a long time.

“I was really impressed with the way he swept, especially against left-arm orthodox bowling.

“I like watching Younis bat.”
