There will be twice as many police officers at Saturday’s AFL grand final compared to last year and fans can expect delays getting into the ground as part of tightened security measures.

Police have reassessed security risks to the grand final after Melbourne terror suspect Numan Haider, 18, was fatally shot outside Endeavour Hills police station after stabbing two officers on Tuesday night.

Victoria Police deputy commissioner Tim Cartwright said there are no specific threats identified to any major Victorian events but police have arrangements in place to deal with any risk.

“Given what’s happened this week, we’ve revisited those risk assessments; we’ve reassessed the security arrangements and we are confident that we are going to provide a safe environment for all Victorians,” Mr Cartwright told reporters on Friday.

“I’m confident that we have everything ready, that we’re well rehearsed and we’ll deal with anything that comes up.”

There will be double the usual number of police posted to the event, though that number wasn’t revealed, and there’ll be more security on trains and trams coming into the city.

Footy fans can also expect delays as they are searched upon entering the MCG.

Mr Cartwright said, if a threat is deemed credible and imminent, the ground would be evacuated but there is nothing to suggest that will occur.

“I’d say to all Victorians `don’t let what’s happening, don’t let concerns get in your way of enjoying a great state and the great events that we have.'”
