Disgraced Todd Carney to captain French club

Disgraced former New South Wales State of Origin playmaker Todd Carney is set to make the move to France after signing a three-year deal with Super League club Catalan Dragons.

Carney will attempt to resurrect his career with the Perpignan-based club after being de-registered by the NRL earlier this year following the latest in a string of off-field incidents.

One of the incidents involved the circulation of a photo of Carney where he appeared to be urinating in his own mouth earlier this year.

In 2008, the 28-year-old was sacked by The Raiders for allegedly urinating on someone’s head at a Canberra nightclub.

Despite his record of misbehaviour, Carney will be appointed captain of the French club.

The signing was hailed as a coup by Catalan chairman Bernard Guasch, who compared it to the club’s previous high-profile overseas recruits Stacey Jones, Steve Menzies and Greg Bird.

“We are delighted that a such talented player chose our club despite a fierce competition with other Super League and Rugby Union clubs,” Guasch said.

“My desire was to attract a world-class player for the 10th season of the Catalan Dragons in Super League and I think we can be really satisfied.”

His contract with the Dragons is yet to be ratified by Super League’s governing body the Rugby Football League (RFL), but club officials are confident the process will be a mere formality.

“We received the agreement for his agent today and we are now waiting for the green light of the RFL who will, I’m sure, register Todd,” Dragons chief executive Christophe Jouffret said in a statement.

Carney played for three clubs in the NRL – Canberra Raiders, Sydney Roosters and Cronulla Sharks – and was twice de-registered.

The 28-year-old won the Dally M Medal in 2010 while at the Roosters and represented both the Blues and Australia.
