The Socceroos have dropped another three places to 79th in the latest rankings released by governing body FIFA.

Australia (391 points) did not win a game in the group stage of the World Cup in Brazil, conceding three goals in each of their three matches.

Sitting above the Socceroos in the rankings are Cape Verde Islands (74th), Angola (75th), Macedonia (76th), Benin (77th) and Congo (78th).

Spain move up one place to seventh alongside Brazil in the only movement in the top 10.

World Cup winners Germany still top the list, ahead of beaten finalists Argentina, the Netherlands, Colombia and Belgium.

Uruguay remain sixth, with Switzerland (9th) and France (10th) rounding out the top 10.

Costa Rica, who reached the World Cup quarter-finals, move up a place to 15th, their highest ranking since the classification began in 1993.

Croatia and Mexico each move up one place to 16th and 17th respectively, while the United States fall three spots to 18th and England stay at No.20.

Costa Rica’s rise above the US makes them CONCACAF’s highest-ranked team.

Although none of the CONCACAF rivals played last month, the moves reflect changing values of past results in the four-year cycle of matches FIFA uses in its calculations.

For the first time, the rankings weigh South America as the strongest confederation ahead of UEFA.
