AFL player on rape charges

North Melbourne utility Majak Daw has been charged with an alleged 2007 sexual assault.

The club confirmed the charge via a statement, a short time after the news was broken in Melbourne media.

It emerged last month the 23-year-old had been under investigation for the alleged incident in Altona North, and a filing hearing is set for July 11.

“The North Melbourne Football club can confirm Majak Daw has been charged by Victoria Police in relation to an alleged sexual offence in 2007,” North’s statement read.

“The club respects the integrity of the legal process and asks the right to privacy of all involved be respected.

“North Melbourne will support Majak and he will remain available for selection at VFL and AFL level.

“This is the subject of an ongoing legal proceeding and it is not appropriate for Majak or North Melbourne to make any comment.”

The Age reported Daw is expected to receive a summons on Tuesday.

Daw has played 12 games for the Kangaroos since being rookie listed by the club in 2010, booting 14 goals.

He is the first Sudanese man to play in the AFL.
