Gold Coast sacks Campbell Brown

Gold Coast have officially parted company with wayward star Campbell Brown, sacking the utility on Wednesday after he broke teammate Steven May’s jaw while on a training camp in the USA.

The Suns made the announcement at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

Gold Coast CEO Travis Auld denied Brown had king-hit his teammate, but confirmed he struck May resulting in a fractured jaw.

Auld made a point of recognising Brown’s contribution to the fledgling club, and Brown sat next to his CEO as he made the announcement.

Auld also said the club would continue to offer professional development services to Brown.

When asked if this was his retirement press conference, Brown replied “Yes.”

Auld said Brown and May had discussed the incident and apologised to one another.

The former Hawthorn premiership winner learned his fate after the AFL club completed their investigation of last week’s incident outside a Los Angeles nightclub following Gold Coast’s pre-season training camp in Arizona.

Brown was suspended on Sunday when the club began their probe.

May returned home to Australia and needed two plates to repair the break in his jaw and was expected to return to training in a fortnight.

Hawthorn star and Brown’s former teammate Josh Gibson was also understood to have been with the group of Suns players when the incident happened.

Brown was already set to miss the opening round of the season because of suspension.

It was not the first time the Suns veteran had landed in hot water during an end of season trip.

He was dumped from the Gold Coast leadership group for his part in Thailand bar-room brawl in September 2011.

Brown – then the Gold Coast deputy vice-captain – was among four Suns players involved in a fracas at an infamous full moon party on the island of Koh Phan Gan.
