Donald Trump’s questionable judgement on Twitter has sparked condemnation yet again with the President accused of “encouraging violence” by posting a bizarre video on social media.

President Trump tweeted a mock video of himself late Sunday night (AEST) tackling and striking a man with a CNN logo superimposed in place of his head, followed by a logo saying “Fraud News Network”.

The video, first posted to Donald Trump’s personal amount, was shortly after retweeted to the official presidential POTUS Twitter page.

CNN accused the President of encouraging violence against reporters and engaging in “juvenile behaviour”.

The video comes a day after President Trump defended his use of Twitter by posting it “is not Presidential – it’s MODERN DAY PRESIDENTIAL”, followed by the line “Make America great again!”

Sunday night’s video appeared to be a modification of footage of a 2007 appearance by Mr Trump at World Wrestling Entertainment’s WrestleMania 23 promotion, in which the then-mogul “takes down” WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.

In the Twitter post, Mr McMahon’s head has been replaced with the CNN logo.

After Trump appears to beat up the CNN effigy, the words, “FNN Fraud News Network” appears at the bottom of the screen in script similar to that used by CNN.

A version of the video appeared last week on a Trump-dedicated page on the Reddit message board site.

As a presidential candidate and as commander-in-chief, Mr Trump has repeatedly made known his disdain for the media, calling it “the enemy of the American people” and frequently referring to mainstream news organisations as “failing” or “fake news.” He has been particularly scathing of CNN.

The video takes his criticism to a new level and drew criticism from the news organisation and on social media.

“It is a sad day when the President of the United States encourages violence against reporters,” CNN said in a statement.

“Instead of preparing for his overseas trip, his first meeting with Vladimir Putin, dealing with North Korea and working on his health care bill, he is instead involved in juvenile behaviour far below the dignity of his office,” CNN said.

The Washington Post reported that a White House spokeswoman with the traveling press corps hotel in New Jersey declined to respond to questions about the tweet.

President Trump had no public events planned for Sunday, while his schedule included phone calls Sunday night (Monday morning (AEST) with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

He is scheduled to return to Washington on Monday evening and participate in an US Independence Day event at the White House on Tuesday.

An unrepentant President Trump posted yet another video on Monday morning (AEST), featuring part of his Saturday-night address to supporters at a rally in Washington, during which he attacked “the fake media” before proclaiming “but I’m President and they’re not”.

Bill Kristol, the conservative commentator and editor-at-large of The Weekly Standard, compared  President Trump’s actions to behaviour that caused the fall of the Roman Empire.

“The speed with which we’re recapitulating the decline and fall of Rome is impressive. What took Rome centuries we’re achieving in months,” Kristol wrote in a Tweet.

The President latest tweet followed his scathing and highly personal Twitter attack on two MSNBC anchors last week, which drew condemnation from Republicans, including Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan, and Democrats alike.

Mr Trump called co-host of the MSNBC Morning Joe program Mika Brzezinski “low I.Q. Crazy Mika”, and said she was “bleeding badly from a face lift” when she visited his Mar-A-Lago estate around New Year’s Eve.

He referred to her co-host and fiance Joe Scarborough, a former Republican US congressman, as “Psycho Joe”.
